Congresswoman Lowey praises huge victory for democracy

WASHINGTON, DC – Congresswoman Nita Lowey (D-NY17/Rockland-Westchester), Chair of the House Appropriations Committee, issued this statement following the Justice Department’s confirmation that the 2020 census questionnaire will begin printing without a citizenship question:

“The proposed citizenship question on the 2020 census questionnaire was a clear manifestation of this administration’s goal to undercount immigrant and minority residents, driven by deep-seeded hate. Democrats took a stand against this attempt to undermine the American political system and won.

“This Independence Day, I am especially grateful for the freedoms and opportunity we enjoy in the United States of America and grateful that the highest court in the land rejected this harmful citizenship question on the census.

“As the printing and administering of the 2020 census move forward, I will remain committed to promoting the accurate count of every person in every community.”
