Bar Brawl in Suffern Draws Reinforcements from Ramapo, Mahwah and Sheriff’s Patrol, Injures Two Officers

Early Sunday morning the Suffern Police Department made several arrests, including a father and two of his sons, following a large fight at a Lafayette Ave. bar. Desk Sgt. Deirdre Smith received a call about a large disturbance taking place at the “Moon Bar” at around 12:30 AM where it was reported a fight was in progress involving several bar patrons. Officers Billy Simurra and Nick Careswell arrived and upon entering the bar observed a large fight in progress. As they attempted to break the fight up several patrons attacked these officers causing one officer to activate his emergency alert feature on his portable radio which sends an alert out to all county departments that an officer is in danger and needs immediate assistance. During this melee two of the defendants attempted to choke these officers and remove one of the guns from an officers holster and punched them as well. These officers deployed Tasers and fought off several perpetrators for several minutes until backup officers arrived from Ramapo, Mahwah and the Rockland County Sheriff’s Patrol. At that time 4 people were arrested on a host of charges including a defendant who refused to disperse after a large crowd gathered outside the bar. Three of the defendants, the father and his two sons, were transported to Good Samaritan Hospital by Sloatsburg Ambulance with injuries sustained during the initial fight and two officers were treated and released for minor injuries. The investigation into this incident is ongoing and additional charges may be filed. We would like to sincerely thank all assisting police agencies as well as Sloatsburg Ambulance for their assistance as due to the extreme violence exhibited by the defendants this could have had much more tragic results.
